Case Study: Resource Optimization

Optimizing Resource Allocation in Pharma

A Fortune 100 pharmaceutical company’s Safety Assessment division required an advanced decision support application to optimize resource allocation for pre-clinical drug development. OSI developed a planning tool that enabled efficient utilization of limited resources, including laboratory personnel, biochemists, and test animals. By leveraging dynamic probability of success (POS) models and scenario analysis, the application optimized resource distribution, ensuring high-potential drug candidates were prioritized. Additionally, the tool allowed the company to assess outsourcing feasibility and its impact on overall resource efficiency.

The Challenge

Pharmaceutical safety assessments require managing multiple drug candidates at various pre-clinical stages, with resources spread across multiple locations. Frequent changes in program requirements and dynamically shifting POS made resource allocation complex. The company also needed a way to evaluate outsourcing options and financial impacts. OSI was tasked with developing a planning tool that could generate feasible allocation plans, integrate with existing systems, and enable real-time updates and scenario analysis.

The Solution

Using the AIMMS platform, OSI developed a decision support application that optimized resource allocation by providing:

  • Real-time allocation plans and scenario analysis
  • Seamless integration with the company’s Oracle Database and OPX2 system
  • Dynamic charting for resource visualization
  • Alerts for data inconsistencies and maintenance needs

The system was tested with real-world data, significantly improving planning accuracy, flexibility, and resource utilization.

Key Results & Benefits

The new application significantly improved the Safety Assessment team’s planning capabilities.Resource allocation efficiency was enhanced, allowing prioritization of high-potential drug candidates while optimizing personnel and laboratory assets. Faster decision-making enabled dynamic scenario analysis, and seamless data integration improved financial visibility and operational outcomes. The tool also facilitated cost-benefit assessments for outsourcing, ensuring better utilization of internal and external resources.

OSI’s Value-Added Contribution

OSI’s scalable planning solution introduced model-based decision-making to the Safety Assessment team. Features included:

  • Advanced visualization tools for real-time resource tracking
  • Flexible data filtering for customized analysis
  • Seamless data interchange with external databases
  • Future-ready architecture for enhancements and system integration
  • Expert project execution, ensuring on-time, on-budget delivery

Following its successful deployment, a second-phase expansion is in progress to further enhance the application’s capabilities.
